SOMATIC HAMMOCKS

MOVEMENTS & MOMENTS

How To Move Organically

In Your Aerial Hammock

Aerial Hammocks for Aerial Movement can be utilised for somatic experiences by incorporating gentle and mindful movements that promote body awareness and relaxation. Somatic practices aim to connect the mind and body. Here's some ideas on how we can achieve this:

  1. MINDFUL BREATHWORK: Focus on your breath during aerial movement. Inhale and exhale with awareness to create a connection between your body, mind and breath, enhancing your somatic experience.

  2. SLOW & INTENTIONAL: Perform movements slowly with observation and a curiosity; emphasising control and awareness of each motion. This helps to feel connected to the stretch and strength-building in a more somatic way.

  3. BODY SCAN: While suspended in the silk, perform a body scan, paying attention to any tension or sensations in different parts of your body. Release tension and relax where needed.

  4. SIX SENSES: Engage all your senses by noticing how the hammock fabric feels against your skin, the sensation of being suspended, and the sounds around you. This sensory awareness can deepen the somatic experience.

  5. CONNECTION: Concentrate on the connection between your mind and body. Be present in the moment and fully engaged in each movement, fostering a deeper somatic experience.

  6. VISUALISE: Use visualisation techniques to enhance your aerial practice. Imagine the silk as a support system that cradles and nurtures your body, allowing for a profound mind-body connection.

  7. STRETCH: Incorporate gentle stretching and self-massage techniques while in the silk to release tension and promote somatic awareness. One of our favourites during classes was the facial massage followed by a scalp rub and then moving to a foot massage.

Remember that somatic experiences in the aerial hammocks are highly individual, so explore and find what works best for you to connect with your body and mind during the practice.
